Training Journal Review of Transformational Learning Diploma

Training Journal Independent Review - March 2010

Advanced Diploma in Transformational Learning - March 2010 Delivered through Training &Leadership Coaching by Angie Norden and Rachel Kirkham Cost is £899 + VAT per person to attend the four-day open workshop

Accelerated learning is about acquiring, understanding and retaining information quickly. Transformational learning is the next step on from that. The Diploma in Transformational Learning combines all the expected elements from Dr Georgi Lozanov and incorporates the Multiple Intelligences of Howard Gardner.

It is aimed at trainers who regularly deliver workshops. Norden and Kirkham, the workshop’s creators and facilitators, have brought the concept of learning, using music, movement, colour etc, right up to date and with more than a hint of humour, energy and enthusiasm.

We were introduced to a timeline that had key points in TL mapped out. With the group split into pairs, we were presented with pictures and biographies of the key influencers of TL. Each pair than had a set amount of time to learn the biogs and decide how to present the information back to the rest of the group. Being TL, this activity had a twist. Tables were set up with various props that we could use to help deliver our message to the group. It was also made clear that the more creative and humorous the use of the props, the better. I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun wearing silly wigs and false, oversize ears!

We were then introduced to the Transformational Learning Cycle, which follows a logical progression from designing creative joining instructions to positive memories of the learning experience. I really liked this part of the workshop as I could see that, by following the cycle, you can design and deliver a training event that not only taps into the learners’multiple intelligences and learning preferences but also makes you consider how enjoyable a learning event should be.

Days one and two sped by in a wonderfully kaleidoscopic mix of activity, from learning about the importance of using music to aid memory to taking a more in-depth look at Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. Towards the close of day two, we were given the business case for using TL. The statistics provided are pretty impressive. We were split into two teams and told to create a presentation using TL techniques and highlighting the relevant statistics. The presentations were to be delivered when we reconvened for days three and four, a month later.

Days three and four included both groups delivering their presentations, which had been worked on during the intervening period; discussions on the positive or negative impact a trainer or facilitator can make by using the right (or wrong) words; a little bit of Brain Gym, and some activities to help us understand how the human brain works and the learning theory that goes with it.

A sumptuous brain-friendly lunch was provided on all four days, which certainly added value to the cost of the diploma.

On reflection, not every section worked for me but I really enjoyed this workshop and would recommend it, to help provide solutions if your time and budgets are under pressure. Jason Yeomanson
